The city council of the German city of Weimar awarded on Wednesday December 10, on the 'International Human Rights Day' the local Human Rights Award 2020 to Father Jo Kuppens from Weert and the human rights activist Felicia K. Monjeza, both from the African country Malawi.

The award was symbolicallypresented by the German ambassador in Malawi Jürgen T. Borsch to the two winners. They both will receive the prize of € 5,000 for their fight against mass human rights violations and for ending slavery on the tobacco plantations in Malawi.

Working on the plantations is the only chance of survival. Workers and their families are still exploited to this day.

About 78,000 children work on the land. They inadvertently ingest large amounts of nicotine every day, which stunts their development and causes permanent damage.

According to the city council award, about 50 percent of women and girls are exposed to sexual violence while working on the plantations.

Kuppens and Monjeza were nominated for the prize by a Catholic organization (Missio) participating in aid projects in Malawi.

Jo Kuppens

Jo (Jos) Kuppens (member of the Order of the White Fathers) was founder and - until recently - director of the prominent ‘Centre for Social Concern’ in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. His center is a critical follower of the government and has been campaigning for years against the (economic and social) oppression of the poor and against the exploitation of population groups, especially tobacco workers and their families. Fr. Kuppens has also successfully committed to a peaceful dialogue between Islam and Christianity in his country.
